STAFF PICK: Live Action by Nate Smith
“You may not know Nate Smith by name yet but if you’ve been listening to funk and soul music for the last decade, chances are you’ve probably heard his backbeats. The drummer, whose impressive credits span from work with Takuya Kuroda, Paul Simon, Brittney Howard, and the vulfpeck adjacent Fearless Flyers, shines on his solo debut. The album is unhurried in its pace and unbothered by its blend of jazz, neo-soul, and hip hop. Full of shuffling breakbeats, Rhodes piano lines, and modulating bass, the album shifts between great instrumental grooves and statement tracks from a long list of guest collaborations.” - Travis Shetter, Paradise Found
